When there's a test...
I usuallt study 5 days before the actual test...
I always forget when I study up to the day before the test day...
Don't take all the teachers notes...
Just take the key and most important ones and focus on those. :D
And...
Self Study...
Somehow group Study doesn't seem to work really well. :P
For me that is.

haha darou??
sometimes yeah, group study sucks hmm wait no no no, that ain't group studying, just my friends pretending to do some group studying.
and I always go for, play first before study, sometimes the other way around, but I see it more appropriate to study first then play, Playing later is like my price for studying.

Self study to gain additional information on my project while at the same time corroborating with everyone who is willing to participate and work. People who are lazy and don't want to work can't be forced into participating in the project, but they sure as hell won't be getting any credit for it.
The time when I study really depends on whether I'm motivated to study. If I'm outside, I study where I have some privacy and silence to get my thoughts going. If I'm at home, I study in my room.
I find it helpful to play some calm, soothing music while I'm studying, but that's just me.

I study.... when I'm in the mood
and I study in front of my PC, with my MSN on, thus I study while I chat
yea I'm cool I know :P
ah, and of course my winamp is also running.
yes, group study make me chat too much, thus study less. self study is better

I'm a second year college student. Honestly, it depends on you and how you study. As for me, it depends what I am studying and like, what am I studying for, i.e. test or just homework.
If I am doing some sort of reading for Humanities or Civilization or something that requires concentration, then I usually do not listen to music.
If is something like Math or Chemistry, then I usually listen to music, etc.
However, the way I think about working/studying is this. That you should give yourself amples amount of time to study and that you should not study with anyone else unless you are doing some sort of problem set together i.e. Math, Chemistry, Economics, etc. With those subjects you can talk to the other person and stuff.
As for essays and things along those lines, I suggest write the essay first, proofread it, and then ask someone else that you trust to proofread it.
As for what I do, I pretty much isolate myself in the library for several hours knowing that I can finish my work in a couple of hours but I just give myself that time just in case I want to do other things i.e. fall asleep while studying or what I am doing now, posting on hongfire.com ^_^
Good luck!

Though I am a music addict (ie. if I do not listen to any single song in one day, I get annoyed and irritated very easily), I usually work in a completely silent room. The reason would be that I get distracted easily as I have short-concentration (wrong terms, I guess...?).
For study style, I prefer studying alone or self-study. Though it is tougher when doing huge researchs alone, it is better because I do not have to worry about team members' progress and about other member(s) go(es) slacking.
Hard to say as depending on what you're studying for.
Memorizing vs theorizing requires different studying methods. Taking an exam vs doing a presentation vs writing an essay.
Then people have different approaches.
Some people cheat study, lf they know the teacher will use certain materials, they will spend more time on finding "how to study" instead of "what to study".
Other people I know do the 15min study plan. Research showed that a person's retainment drops off dramatically after 15 minutes and must rest for at least 5 minutes. Some people have hopped on that bandwagon.
Some people do social studying, in which they get groups of people and start bouncing off each other.

I voted on study with music depends though, if stressed or already engaging then I dont need it otherwise I stick to instrumental, orchestra, or BGM from OSTs
self study's better b/c group studying with friends seems to never work... better to just ttalk about it casually than scheduling "group study"
try to study one week before using every other day for actual studying(other days to do other assignments) all at home so I can relax and associate nothing with studying really

I think it's called attention span, but yeah, close enough. I know lots of people who have the same problem with something having to hold their attention for a long time but ar eunable to do it, though I myself don't have it.

I have to study while it's quiet. Or while there is white noise in the background. I tend to work better with white noise and can concentrate more. I can't study with music because I end up not listening to the music while doing HW. Or if I focus more on music, then I wouldn't do the HW. Lastly, eating while doing HW is a bad idea for me too. I'm usually doing one thing or the other.

do it while eating it helps because food donsen't make noises that distract you. (chips noises dose not distract people, well not me anyways)

Depends on what I'm studying.
- If it's stuff that depends on logic, like math, physics and such. I practice 1 or 2 weeks before the test. If I don't understand something, I ask a friend to explain me (1 on 1, no groups) or I ask a teacher.
- If it something in which I have to memorize, I read it for a week. If I have to memorize something for a presentation, then I practice the timing of my speech, plus pronunciation and everything that involves a good presentation.
I really don't like studying in groups. From my personal experience you only lose your time. The only in which I would study with a group, would be if I already know (and understand) everything I had to study for, meaning that most likely that group asked me to teach them.
Thx guys for those replies :P

uhm , this make me remember about my painful days in highschool . In the year of final-exam all the teachers are like demons , they force the students to study , study and study . Btw , i have to wake up at 4:30 am to study , go to school at 6am , go home at 11am . Go to school again at 1 pm ... study like a maniac still 5pm , slither home at 5:30 pm , eat some food and continue to fight with my private tutor until 10:30 pm . Get to my room at 11pm , prepare my books and note for tomorrow . Go to bed at 11:30pm. Anyway , this hellish-days are worth to cost , i can finally reach the college gate which are somehow impossible for me . That was my ways of study .
let see
depend on what i have to do
generally speaking i usually try to memorize things(bad habit from high school)
normally i try to use reference to my study this proof to be the least stressfull for me
the best one of course try to study abit everyday expecially after you get the material
other than that i like to have some body teach me more than anything else since it makes the best out of me(i remember and able to do it faster than using reference)
and for the poll i think i just studiying takes the best out of me
expecially in memorize subject like economics, biology, etc(fyi for this i need a VERY quiet place and that make my study time in midnight till morning where least sound could be heard)
or i could study while hearing music(soft not rock or hip hop or other) if i'm studying math or other
i can study while playing but for god sake the result is very bad

I need a good amount of stress to really study (in contrast to only read), so most of my studieng is done in the day(s) before an exam. That doesn't mean I do nothing before that though. I usually remember most that was said in class, and sometimes I read a bit in the book for the course or look up some info on my own and such.
But the real memorizing and such has to happen in a somewhat stress full environment. Its funny but my brain works best under such circumstances :D It is like it goes in overdrive :D
But its dangerous since too much stress can block you....it is a tightrope you walk.
For studying/cramming : I need absolute silence.
To rehearse it in my mind before an exam : trance music. It is funny I don't get it myself but it seems to have some effect on my sub conscience that helps :D
i study while standing on my head

I like conceptually linking materials, so it makes rote memorization difficult unless I can find a way to link it up. I usually study with a sketch pad so l can graphically link materials to symbols or pictures to remember locations and hierarchies. It makes for a lot of pages of sketches, but usually the time studying isn't much more than the time required to visualize and draw the material. When I'm pressed for time, I usually focus on just sketching the lecture notes. I like tarot artwork, so I guess the idea is along the lines of a Pictorial Key to Microbiology (or A&P, Labor Economics, and so on).
It just seems to take less time if both hemispheres are working on the materials.

I have my exams coming up, and I'm kind of in the lazy mood (hell, I've been in this mood for pretty long).
I have to force myself to study.
I used to study while listening to music in high school, but it gets distracting after awhile, because I either focus on the music or focus on the study.
Now it's just straight study, and the occassional group study doesn't hurt. I wouldn't mind getting someone to teach me the topics that I missed out.

When I do study as in never(who actually studied/studies in HS), I normally find a comfortable place and listen to music.
I prefer to study and work on my own too.

It depends i usually study quite easily and don't have any problems studying with music or even while watching tv but if it's something i have problems with and really have to focus on studying i get irritated quite easily and need complete silence
and in my country it's like group study doesn't even exist unless you count the 5 minutes before entering a classroom when there's a test then everybody starts reviewing the subject and asking each other questions
it's quite a funny sight actually.
Edit: I've actually had cases where the music saved me. If i black out thinking about the songs i listened to makes me remember what i was studying the day before.

Heh surprised there's plenty of responsible people out here. I wonder if there's a way to improve your focus while studying. Coz whenever I try to study, naked women always pop off my head therefore I lose focus and start jackin-off instead.

I have the memory to memorize everything that is important in a test in just 10 minutes. That's probably when I forgot to study or too busy playing =P the day before the test is held. When I am actually studying, I usually turn on my music and play some games a long the way ^^

I haven't studied a day in my life. I either memorize it the first time, or just guess. I still get good grades either way.

I've never really had a successful study GROUP but when I study it's for short increments of time and I review the information once and then come back to it like two or three times and see what I remember and make note in my head of the things that I have difficulty remembering and then I always study right before the test (whenever I can, class before if need be)
oh and I listen to music at home..I don't use headphone for out of the house though because it calls to much attention to the music and away from the studying for me so I usually listen to pretty chilled out music like metric or the shins
oh yea and lol at (ex. beans) xD

i never do study groups. they tend to be non-productive (i.e. take a long time) and are full of stupid people. i only go if i know i'll be able to leave whenever i want and there's someone smart there.
usually doing homework and a review is enough for me. i do the review 2 days before the test, with minimal studying on the day before with a quick review right before the test.
foreign language is an exception though. study study study, practice practice practice!

Well... i open the book, either lying at mat or bed, read it for several minutes, wake up and read manga. Keeps happen until i sleep.
When doing my college assignment, open computer, started with Battlefield 2 or CS with bot, frustated because keeps dying and open Freehand or photoshop to do my assignment. One hour or less (depended on the urgency. If not really urgent, it'd become 30 minutes) feels tired and stopping for a mangascan.
Yeah, total slacker.

my study habit is studying while in front of a TV which is playing a movie or show i've already seen... since i'm into anime right now, i usually study in front of my PC which plays some anime series i've already seen...
i dive into the book, remember a fact, and look at the screen...
then, when i take the exam and i forget something, i replay the movie/show in my head and the facts come back to me...
i've been doing this since elementary ad it works like a charm for me...
and because of the way i study, i can't go with groups...
Well, I prefer to study in a silent and still environment.
I avoid studying in vehicles in movement because I get a little nauseous a few minutes later.
I usually avoid sudying while eating too, unless it's a very simple subject that doesn't require much time to cram.
And I used to study while listening to music but I dropped this habit mostly because I'm more of a person that prefers to do one thing at a time and also a bit because there's not much worth listening to in radios nowadays.
For the most part, I prefer to study alone and in university because I can get more easily distracted at my home, especially if my brother is around. Sometimes I join study groups too but, unless there's a considerable amount of people who knows the subject for sure, I tend to feel like I wasted my time with them. Bottomline, group studies tend to not work too well with me.
Oh, and if I'm studying for a foreign language test (English and Spanish for now), I hardly need more than an hour to study right before the test. For more complicated subjects, I tend to start studying earlier. And I strongly emphasize the "tend" bit because I've been more of a slacker lately. :p
On a side note, it's a bit funny that the OP requested his thread to be closed over a year ago and it's still open. Well, I hope it stays open because, even if nony's project is over, the discussion in this thread is far from being irrelevant or obsolete. :)

I tend not to study and still pass. Well not really...I usually don't even know what the topic is about nor do I pay attention to classes until the finally moments before the test. I wonder how I passed those test....
But a tip from a friend of mine is, if you studying for subject such as something you like, the mind will accept it easier(sink in easier). So don't spend as much time on those as you would on subject that you dislike.
