Japanese, (semi-broken northeasterner) English, Mandarin in that order.

Oddly enough, I can't understand 関西弁 (Osaka speak) very well. Then again, I sound like I learn and was from Kyoto or something when I speak aloud which is a good thing ^^;;

Latin doesn't count as "spoken" tho. *pouts* Stultus sum.

i live in new york, and there is a japanese bookstore on 49th st, i go there once in a while...
Kinokuniya? *grins* <3 Kinokuniya. I hear the one in the city isn't bad. They have another one near/in Fort Lee, NJ, right across the river from NYC that's near a Mitsuwa. Best baked pastries I've had in quite a while. ^^;;;

Interesting thought: when you speak a second/third language, do you have to *force* yourself to say, "k, now im gonna speak and think [language]", or does it come naturally?

My first language is Chinese too, hakka though, not many ppl seem to speak it. I've tried to learn mandarin but i got lazy and never really learnt it :P And since i was born in Australia, I can't read or write chinese too.. except my name.
My second language is english, but I know it better than hakka... that's beacuse I live in Austraila.
I learn Japanese for about 6 months before i stopped because i was lazy (and had too much school work at the time). I'm giong to korea in about 2 months, hopefully i can get by with just english and a phrase book. I've tried pronouning some of the words in the korean phrase book, but I know i'm not saying it right.

Interesting thought: when you speak a second/third language, do you have to *force* yourself to say, "k, now im gonna speak and think [language]", or does it come naturally?

I suppose it depends on how well you know your other languages. I can pretty much switch between english and hakka without thinking, and often (if i'm talking to someone else who knows both as well) switch between english and hakka in the same sentence.

I speak English, really bad spanish and equally bad Japanese.

So technically, I really only speak "one" language; I don't consider poor language skills being able to "speak" a language; in order to speak you have to be able to communicate. IMHO. And if your skills in a particular language don't provide you with the ability to communicate properly, then you can't really speak it.

Ex: I can probably float my way through a conversation with a French speaker, but that doesnt mean I can speak French. :)

I speak 100% Mandarin(chinese) and English, probably 90-95% of Taiwanese(Hokkien?) and some Japanese - Although with Japanese I only understand/am fluent enough to use for daily conversations (learnt japanese for around 3 years, + learning from overdose of anime :D); ask me to go to a Japanese lecture and I'd probably only pick up 40-50%... Same goes with Cantonese as well, although not as good as my Japanese; only *just* enough for conversations..

what do you mean not many people speak it?? i know plenty of people who speak.....and chinese isn't a language -_-; is a cultural section...-_-; i think that is the bloody right word -_-;

its either you speak
cantonese
mandarin
tiasanese
fugenese
etc;
that is all the chinese languages i know and heard of

sorry...they should be:
Taiwanese: it's rather like a Chinese(manily MinNan, or aka Houlouwei) creole with Japanese loan words.

Hakka: very old/ancient Han sound....

Fukenese/Fujianese/Hokkien: and also many Singaporean/Malays also speak it.

Wu(Shanghai/Suzhou/Hangzhou etc area local dialects...another ancient Han sound.)

Northern part of China: probably they just speak Mandarin with slightly different accents and minor dialects.

and many many more local/accent dialects...

To be honest with myself,
mother tongues: Chinese(Mandarin[99%] and Taiwanese[85%])
fluent:English[>90%]/Japanese[80%]/French[>70%]
PS: it's not a bragging thread, so none of us should pretend to understand some other languages that they actually don't.
listening only& response with Chinese or English: Hakka/Catonese.

It's very sad that I can't speak my mom's language, Hakka, at all...
I still must say that "the" education system in Taiwan is f*cked up again now...

Swedish from birth.
English unless the accent is very wierd (brits accuse me of being a yank, yanks accuse me of being british).
I understand most norwegian (some accents can be wierd).
Written danish (spoken danish is an unbreakable cipher).
Some german (studied at school for 4 years, 20+ years ago).
I can make qualified guesswork of dutch, at least written, combining scandinavian and german :)

And finally japanese, as long as it's judo terms :)

I think I answered this in the coders thread. :)

But for natural languages, my native language is American English. I also have a smattering of British English, and enough German to ask directions. I also know enough Latin roots to piece together a rough idea of several Romance languages, but only in writing.

"Olim, iamdudum, fere die Veneris proximo, Winnie ille Pu sub nomine Sandersi solus in silva habitibat."

Oh...there was a topic like this already....

My mother tongue is Finnish. I have been learning English for 9 years so far, and I speak it quite good, but I still think my German is near it. As I moved to Germany 6.5 years ago. French, I do not really understand well, so I can't say that i speak it. So for the languages I speak are Finnish, English and German. And soon probably Japanese....
