well today I had four wisdom teeth removed today. so right now my face looks like a football and I can't feel any parts of my cheeks, lips or tongue. but at least i have a fair few days off work and uni, so I can just sit around doing now except resting and occasional watching of anime. so what are your experiences of having wisdom teeth surgery?

Similiar experience as yours, except having the days off from work. Can't afford to lay off just because of some wisdom teeth removal. Mine happened to be removed just a few months ago. It's a weird but interesting experience, having the tounge, gums, and parts of the mouth numb for hours. No problems with the pain after the removal of the teeth though, somehow I'm able to tolerate it compared to not having them pulled out. Adding to that, I usually don't eat much anyway (usually twice a day).

Not only were the caps of my wisdom teeth pointed in the horizontal direction, but they were still a few centimeters in my gums. The dentist had to:
1) Cut my gums open.
2) Drill into my teeth so they can get a grip on them.
3) Rip them (all four) out of my mouth.
But that wasn't even the worst part; that came afterwards. They only gave me 6 pieces of gaze, and said that the bleeding should stop in a few hours... wrong. I ended up bleeding for a little over 24 hours. And, before they cut into me, the nurse accidentally spilled local all over my tongue, causing it to swell up for several hours. So that night, i basically got no sleep for fear of drowning in my own blood or choking on my swollen tongue. Oh yeah, and they only gave me a vial of penicillin, no pain meds, so i also had to deal with the pain. But the worst part of it was the taste... the mixture of blood and local stayed on my tongue for a little under two days...

And no, removing wisdom teeth doesn't make anyone dumber. After the extraction of these wisdom teeth, it leaves a gap in the gum which requires long periods of time for them to close up. So once in a while, manually prying out (with a toothpick) unidentified food object from these gaps is required (somethimes even toothbrush can't reach it). Very annoying. The only thing that hurts is the fact knowing that you lose some precious parts of your body. Sigh.....:( Well, at least I get to keep my wisdom teeth as souvenirs.

oh, i received this syringe type sprayer with a slightly bent plastic tube at the end. they told me to use this if i need to rinse them to remove food scraps. and even have 2 ice packs that I wear to ease the swelling and to prevent bruising.

well I got my wisdom teeth taken out coz eventually they will come out and just stuff up the whole purpose of getting braces before. so best done now than later and see all those medical bills go down the drain for nothing.

Had mine taken out a few years ago. The process didnt really bother me that much acctually but all I ate for a week was applesauce. I used a coffee can and bled into it while I sat around for hours playing Everquest since there was nothing else to do.
I had remember I had the choice of either novacane or laughing gas (I think they called it that) Glad chose the novacane.

It looks like I'll be getting my wisdom teeth pulled and they said that I may have another one (maybe more) coming up behind the ones I have already.

Not too keen on getting rid of the food particles with a toothpick. I can imagine the pain may be worse than when I chipped my tooth if I slip up. Looking forward to put up my horror story in the future. *ugh* :)

I remember my wisdom teeth being pulled out. I couldn't eat Christmas dinner... it totally sucked. However, I was tripped out on Tylenol 3's to ease the pain and my mom made me hot lemon-tea and rum. I really didn't get very swollen, or bruised, although mine too had to be cut out because they were so impacted and horrizontal. I was better by new years and was out having dinner with family when on the way out, I pulled out the remainder of the disolving stitches myself because I couldn't wait until I went to see the dentist to have the strings pulled out. They were really annoying after awhile cuz it felt like you had something in your teeth, but you couldn't remove it.

well right now its either soup, ice cram or porridge. well right now all the swelling has gone down except for my cheeks, so at least i can eat properly without my fat lip being in the way :p

though I still gotta wear the ice packs.i can tell you this much, wearing these ice packs around my mouth makes me look like a ninja

Yeah, that sucks. I had mine taken out several years ago too. I was so freaked out with them putting a needle in me that I nearly passed out from that. I have this phobia with needles so that's never helpful when someone comes at me with one. After I woke up, I was so drugged up that I had to get a ride home. My doctor put me on some nice pain pills for a while, however I ended up with four dry sockets & that was the worst. Just them packing that gauze in those sore holes & the chemical tasted like rotten cloves. Oh it was just awful. They never healed just right & sometimes when I drink something hot or cold, the spots where I had my wisdom teeth removed still hurt.

I'm glad that the swelling went down, though. If you have popsicles, those seem to be of some comfort for the pain, plus they taste good too!!! :)

I had all four taken when I was 14/15 (16 now) because the doctor persuaded my mom into doing so and I think they had a problem with overdosing me with the sleeping drug thing because I didn't wake up for a longgg time, and when I did, I think it was the first time I ever got drunk off a needle.

Doing all 4 didn't hurt that much actually, but it felt like there was a big hole in my mouth, I didn't eat for a couple of days though which sucked. But still...that was mean...the doctor made me lay there to talk to him calmly and then he stabs my arm and makes me pass out T-T, at least the nurse was hawt. ^ - ^

I had 6 teeth pulled (2 of which were wisdom teeth) for braces. I was bleeding everywhere and ran out of gauze since I was bleeding so much. Got some on my pillow as well. My face was pretty puffy as well. After I had my braces removed I had to get the other 2 remaining wisdom teeth removed. Which wasn't as bad as getting six removed.

Does it hurt when you get them pulled out? Or are you just asleep and you dont feel anything? When do you usually pull them out?

well it depends on what you get done, but also depends on your condition on getting your wisdom teeth taken out.

for all four of mine, i was asleep as I can't imagine having my gums cut open and teeth pulled out when I'm asleep. say if it is one tooth then you might go under general anaesthetic, where you are awake.

the time they usually pull them out is when you want to. I got mine done now rather than wait till they start causing me pain. or you can get them taken out when they hurt.

Man that sucks. I'm going to have to get mine pulled out in the next year as well because the bottom ones are growing sideways and they'll destroy my other teeth if I don't get them removed. So that means I'll have to get the top done as well. It doesn't seem pleasant because they're going to have to cut open the gums and my teeth are sideways so I don't know how the hell they're going to solve that problem.

Was 25 years ago for me, don't remember much more than the pain LOL. I feel for you Adun, but hopefully it's for the best. Mine had to go because my mouth/Jaw is to small to hold all my teeth, really needed braces also, but after the wisdom teeth surgery, I said forget it.

Hey people I have my wisdom teeth removed too when I was around 15/16 years of age I think. And it appears that I am getting another one behind one of my other ones too. It was a kinda painful experience *cry* to get them all four out. It had to be done so I could get braces. It took quite a long time at the dentist I started crying and after the first two, my parents decided to do the other two in hospital... some days later in the Hospital there was this nurse who did the other two in a jiffy. Really amazing. I did got candy afterwards too..

The swelling did not take so long by me. It felt weird in the beginning. I Mostly eated liqued food like soup.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled last Thursday. During surgery, at one point, the dentist was literally trying to pry one of my wisdom teeth out. :( THAT HURT!! Eventually, it came out. Now, a few days later, my mouth still hurts from that day but other than that, it's OK. I'm going back on Thursday to get stitches removed from my mouth. The dentist put in stitches when he pulled my teeth out.

So yeah.

I have to say interesting stories. Now here comes mines.

So I was on a regular check by the dentist. I cannot remember the reason, but for some reason she had to take a picture(x-ray, of course) of my teeth. Then on the picture, you could clearly see that my wisdom teeth were coming out, but they were so near the next teeth that if they woudl be coming out those teeth would be getting some serious damage, even I could see that cleary. As you probably guessed, they were quite horizontal, besides the ones on the top. After that she said that I should have them removed soon. When I got home I just said my dad that they need to be removed. He got me an opointment by a jew chirurg(I hope you call them like that, in German it would be Kieferortopade, I have jsut no idea how you call them in Englsih, so please excuse me for that.).

Okey, the time came and the apointment was there. I was waiting in the waiting room for the nurse to call me in. Then it came, it was my turn. They first wanted to take another X-ray picture, so that they really know what is going out etc. Then I needed to wait for a while. And I still had no idea, they were going to take my teeth on that day. Neither did my dad, we both thought it was only a pre check, before taking them really out, but no. They were taken on that day. The only choice I was given was: One or two teeht on the same time? I decided to go for two, because it would be kinda senseless to have your teeht taken one by one. After that it started. I sat down, he gave me 8 shots of somekind of painkiller in my mouth. Whole right side was cut off from any feeling. Now I was little nervous already, as I knew it would start in couple of minutes.
After the time we had to wait, till the painkiller had started to work the chirurg started the job, after he asked if it stil lhurts. And it did not. He started with the upper teeht on the right side. It took less than 1 minute to get it out and I was kind surprised when I started to feel that he was sewing it togheter, that is he not going to take the teeth with him. But then my dad said, that the first teeht was already out, and I did nto realitze it. The second one was little harder, it has to be cut in two or three parts. And it hurt, but I just had to say that it hurt, so I got more painkiller. This time it went inside the teeht, as it had been cut already. And after a while, it came out as well. Sewed togehter and it was all finnished. I just had to wait a while before I stood up, befcause incase I might feel bad or so. Nothing like that happened. Than I got some more painkillers in form of tablets, for the rest of the day. And then I was allowed to leave. Of course, I did not go to school on that day.
On the way out of there, I asked the nurse when I should come back again. And I was still talking about the same week. She was kinda surprised as it took a while for her to answer. And then in the end she could say that I have to come back when the old wounds have heeled. Then I just said: Oh...and said I woujld come then back.

So my dad brought me back home, I went in and my stepmother was there. And she was kinda: What the **** are you doing here? She did not say it like that, but I could read it from her face. Before I could answer which I could have not really done anyway, my dad came in as well and said that two of my wisdom teeht were taken out. And she still had hard time to belive it.
The painkiller the doctor had gave me, had almost left already even though it was not even an hour ago. I decided to wait for 30 minutes or so, before I take one of the painkillers I was given. And only to see, that they do absolutly nothing. The pain came, but only if I was long enough in a sitting positions. I was not even able to watch animes, for long. After that i had to go back to the couch and rest. Till enough time had passed that I could take something that works on me.

The second time was quite similar, besides that I did not use the tabletes I was given by my doctor and went straight for the other ones. And that I had hard time not to laugh when the wisdom teeth were taken, the blood flying in the air looked so interesting and funny. Besides that it was about the same.

Sorry, for writing a long story liek this, but I just felt like writing something more detailed. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I had did enjoy writing it. And I really hope it is not too long....I just checked how long it really is...

Get this guys... I'm getting EIGHT teeth pulled out this thanksgiving... Thats right... 8! I need the 4 wisdoms out (the upper two are up right near my sinus cavity which are larger than a normal person's and in my upper jaw bone...). Also need 4 of my pre-molars taken out for braces... So yeah, my mouth is going to be FUBAR for thanksgiving... Funny cause my teeth are not that bad, but once you talk to the right ppl, your teeth seem horrible. Total price tag w/o insurance: 7k. I do have insurance though, so no worries! ^^

EDIT: Interesting story from my landlord.

She got her's pulled out, but it struck a nerve badly and her left side of her face and her left eye bruised up and almost turned blue-black. She couldnt talk that well since the swelling came up a few days after the surgery, so she called 911 because she freaked. Police came, saw her, and arrested her husband!!! She couldnt talk well so she could not explain it. Took an hour for them to clear the mess...

I had all four out at once. When they laid me down, they hooked me up to an IV and then stuck a needle into it, telling me to relax. Well, I didn't feel sleepy at all, so I was thinking what the hell... Next thing I know I'm waking up, lol.

I was pretty swollen for awhile, and basically lived off pudding and milk shakes, which I drank down. Sucking on a straw could ruin the clot and make you bleed a lot. :/

I also learned that you really need to clean th back of your mouth out. REALLY need to make sure... Cause I got an infection on my lower left side. >< They had this thing made of cloves, and was basically a little screw which they screwed into the hole. DAMN that hurt. For over a week my entire jaw throbbed.

But, other than the infection, all was good.

Aww! No fair! You got to sleep though the whole thing? I just got really powerful anti-pain shots.. They didn't work as well as I had hoped.. It left my face numb for the entire day, and it started to wear off when I was going to bed. Good timing! Man, that's unpleasant..

i had mine removed a few months ago....my nose bleed as the tubes that provide oxygen scrape against my nostril wall. nose bleed for abt 2-3 days. take note u need buy mouth rinsing solution or u b like me without brushing teeth 4 1 wk n get multiple ulcer that hurts alot even when drinking. regarding removal of wisdom tooth, i heard that removal will affect ur memory abit...

adun50
10-15-2005, 06:57 PM
you don't necessarily have to buy mouth rinsing solution, you can use lukewarm water and salt. just won't rinse too hard or your blood clots will come off, then you'll start bleeding all over again.

I got to pull of my only 2 wisdom tooth, luckily I only have 2 on my upper jaw...

Btw... usually how long will it keep your face swollen after removing the wisdom tooth?? I've got to work and plan on taking a few days off for it... Damn, I'm afraid that my face is going to be TOO swollen. :(

Congratulations on enduring the long and grueling days that follow the removal procedure. We should all get a cookie or something for it.(I'm Serious)
Of course this wasn't my first time getting my teeth pulled and it wasn't the worst experience either. I would have to say that first bad experience would have to be getting my front tooth knocked out and the procedure they took to shove it back in... Then my second experience is getting my back four teeth pulled out for braces. third would have to be the four wisdom teeth getting pulled. and last for now would've been getting that front tooth re-pulled out to put in a sythetic tooth shoved back in that space. Have a nice day.......
P.S. - Taking the pain killer for the wisdom teeth removal was not a good idea. It made me so nautious and queezy that whole day that I never took painkillers throughout the rest of the healing process.
