Tell me, are there any good, mindless movies out there any more? What happened? All I'm asking for is a Rumble in the Bronx here, let alone something I can enjoy sober.
Let's look at my 3 latest attempts.


Kung Fu Hustle - 2/10
Honestly, what was all the noise about? The action is subpar wire fare with absolutely no innovation. I've seen better in early Yuen Biao films.
If you accept an incoherent plot and banal characters then you'd best be compensated with superior ass-kickery.

Constantine - 1/10
Again you have supposedly snazzy special effects designed to mask a terrible movie; but since today's moviegoer is so Matrix-ed out, the now-standard effects only accentuate what the film is lacking.
Anyone remember that movie with Arnold where he has to protect the girl with stigmata when she's chased by the devil? The one that's exactly like T2 except with Satan instead of the T1000? Well Constantine is that movie after it has been digested and excreted by a mental handicap.
Also who the balls decided to make Gabriel a woman?

Steamboy - 3/10
This might be impressive if Studio Ghibli never existed. The animation is nice but not spectacular, and the plot is mediocre at best. The whole thing is essentially the same series of events happening several times; it feels like a single episode of a cartoon show that was extended into a two hour movie.
Points for the pseudohistorical Victorian Britain though, that was kind of cool.

hmmm, well i too thought constantine was a load of crap, but the hype is always due to the popularity of actors/actresses and publicity i think, such as the hummer H2(piece of crap if u ask me, i mean about 10miles per gallon XD) but kung fu hustle was funny and entertaining tho the plot was a little cliche i must admit, but i really liked it :D as for steamboy, i havent seen it yet XD. o and btw thanks for the sets :D and its funny how u just combined these 2 totally irrelevant subjects together :D

My suggestion is to turn your brain off and enjoy the mindlessness for what it is. Exceptional works are art are exceptional because they are few. Your mind grows jaded and accustomed to things you've seen, and it becomes harder and harder to innovate.

Where is that childlike sense of wonder where everything in the world grips you with fascination? Rescind that jaded attitude my friend and even stupid garbage like Kung Fu hustle becomes mild entertaining. I guess this is why people take drugs...

even though i'm from HK, i have to diss HK movies. i also find kung fu hustle absolutely horrible. as w w has said, those so called "kung fu movements" are so fake that you know they have to be wire work. then there's shaolin soccer. that one try to make the audience laugh using things that're totally NOT funny.

Wow, I was just about to request these Media Foundry CGs after seeing the Discode Reverse torrent. Talk about instant service. Torrents delivered instantly by telepathic request? The Future Anime Network indeed... now all I need is for the files to immediately materialize on my hard drive. :eek:

I saw Steamboy. Very westernized, very plot-centric with a bunch of chase scenes and a final battle. Not many moments of character development. In that regard, the movie was very tight and flowed well, more so than most anime. From setting to plot to music, it seems Otomo tailor-made the movie to appeal to American-movie watchers, oblivious to the reasons why many outside Japan enjoy anime in the first place. The most remarkable thing about the movie was the setting, and that's what was appealing before I watched it. In the end I'm left asking, "is this what we waited years for?" I asked the same question after watching Innocence, except Oshii went the complete opposite direction to make something only robots could connect with (pun intended). I loved GITS2, but I wouldn't have minded a little gratuitous gun play and Motoko fanservice. Oh wait, that's what Stand Alone Complex is for. :D

Final Analysis?
Otomo: Sold out. Shouldn't have.
Oshii: Should've sold out. A little.

I know this has been posted for quite a while now, but I don't really agree with this one point. :p Constantine contained a very nice plot (with the whole "link between heaven and hell" idea and whatnot) along good and up-to-date visual effects, plus Keanu Reeves really delivers good acting in whatever productions he gets to be in, this one not being an exception. This might just be a matter or preference and/or taste, but if you wanna see good dialogs between an angel of God and satan himself, this is it. Oh, and the idea of Gabriel being a woman was actually very cunning and one of the most interesting things in the movie, since angels supposedly don't pertain to any specific gender. Awesome. ;)

actually gabriel was never really a man either, just artists of that time made everyone if importance a man other than mary.

Angels are neither gender, they can be either in apperance, this is due to there true forms.
