My first guess would be you don't have the right codecs installed. WMP doesn't come loaded with all the open source drivers like Xvid that are standard for fansubs these days. I suggest you get a codec bundle and install it. Try ffdshow (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow) for a start.
And by the by, if you want to ditch WMP and all the others in favor of one stable, steamlined played that will run everything, go grab Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/) instead. You won't regret it.

Be a bit more descriptive than 'an error occured'.
Did the file just not play? Did WMP give you a BSOD? Did WMP crash with the default windows crash report? Did WMP report back any error messages / warnings / etc. ?

Try using windows media player 6.4 also known as mplayer2 it works better than all other media players from microsoft. Second the codec for the file may not be installed use gspot to check that. You can give quickview player a go ( it is a dos player so with XP you must set it to run as a 98 application and it is shareware but still will play about ten minutes of a file after the shareware time expires) .
Finally thought microsoft may have done it on purpose with wmp10 so that it will only play MS stuff. Okay probably not but it would not surprise me.

let me guess. your media player crashed and said you were busy doing a certain action.
and let me also guess you installed a codec pack and installed the wmv9 codec.
you broke your wmp now by installing a codec pack. uninstalling the codec pack won;t help. the only thing you can do is reinstall wmp.

i love using real player so its all goodYou are aware that Real Player is a teeming cesspool of spy- and adware that is not properly uninstalled when you uninstall Real Player, right?

As mentioned you may just not have the correct codecs installed. vlc and mpc come with prebuilt decoders installed for many types of files.
ffdshow should solve your problem but i will also suggest going to media player classic.
It's true that ffdshow can decode xvid, divx video with less memory resource ( you can check with task manager )
On IRC they recommended to use Xvid or Divx instead of ffdshow if you cpu can support it. They said it has more quality.
