Gallery's gone

Some of you might have noticed there are no images on the gallery anymore. All the images were deleted as a horrible side effect of the gallery upgrade. Some of the images might be recovered, but theres no guarantee.

1) We can't bring the torrent section back up so to speak right now. Its a legal thing not a technical one.
2) Bugs. Like the one where you have to login through the gallery and it would only last for a few days.
2.5) Don't have to worry about errors, if anything a server is being hammered by some pissed off person.

Think I found out why the images where purge by the gallery. Its because of how the two web servers are synced. An update to one server takes a few minutes to reach the other one, so one server was doing half the upgrade then the other one did the rest and didn't see the new layout for the images and purged them.

Oh that sucks, but it happend to our gallery too when we did an upgrade.
Ever since then we try to back everything up, which is a real pain when you have a huge gallery.
Only way we can do it is that several people work on it and each one takes over a section.
Well, not to worry.
It will be fun to rebuild everything once again, even tho I was just about to go on another search...lol ;)

Thankfully, I saved all my upoaded images, plus all of my favourites from the Idol and Beautiful Girl sections of the Gallery.

Yes you can upload images without the original uploaders name.
If you haven't figured out what Anaksulnamun is talking about there is a new gallery that is a work in progress. Its located here www.hongfire.com/gallery2 Its a work in progress so things might change dramatically over the next few days.

Actually, I work for IBM in web hosting, so I daresay I know a lot more about keeping a major internet site running, and having a code promotion and data retention policy. Obviously sites like HongFire aren't going to be able to afford the equipment and tools we use (no offense meant - they're bloody expensive), but some basics like backups, testing software prior to production deployment, using clustering for backend data, NOT putting it on the web servers, etc, will save everyone a lot of heartache and time.

But by far, backups are key. Even on your own personal computer. I lost an 80GB drive to a hardware failure, and never recovered a lot of its contents. Think for a moment of all of the files you have - your e-mail, your finances, your records, letters, photos, music, and yes, anime and hentai. Just pause and think about what it would mean if you lost it all, and then go check out how cheap an extra hard drive is (I saw 320GB for $140 just this past week - www.dealnews.com). Multiple revisions is important as well in case you don't notice something is b0rked until after additional backups.

Legal problems means that either someone is being sued or about to be sued. Usually legal problems in USA means someone wants money and is willing to go to the court system to get it or may be a injuction to stop someone from doing something. I don't know what the legal problems Hongfire is under and do not want to venture to guess. I hope its not serious and this is just a precautionairy action.

Did the gallery really need an update? I thought the admins were working on revamping and restoring the torrent section? Seems that would have been a priority over fiddling with a part of the site that was at least up and running. All we need now is an "update" to the forums section to finally close this puppy down. If any admin reads this and is interested, I started ripping up the gallery (I'm kinda lazy and hate clicking on pages and pages to get a few good pictures, so I download them all then filter them out on my PC). I started 2 days ago and only did the CG section, unfortunely. I have the CG section has of 6/15/2005 (4493 pics).

I would be happy to upload it somewhere so someone can re-integrate it within the new gallery.

Well, that's not very surprising, considering the gallery really need to get updated since the system sometimes things a member as a stranger and don't allow us to see the pic :D . It can relieve the bandwidth from most usage coz i think 75% only come for gallery :P (so do i few months ago)
Anyway, some of u really need to stop pushing the the moderator, stress only make someone less efficient :) .

I was wondering...in the process of creating a new gallery... can you create a way that we can upload images in a bunch instead of one by one at a time. I don't know if the server can handle that but its a good idea to save time. Also people would be spending less time on the gallery to upload their images into the gallery which would save bandwidth wouldn't it????

Then it's just a few bugs that need to be hammered out. Then it's legal troubles.

So what's the truth? You have a loyal community who've been visiting faithfully through the bad times and you've sort of been leaving them hanging for a long time and the story keeps changing. I think the admins should just come clean.

When it was just the torrents, you could say the site didn't owe its visitors anything, but now it's their contributions that have been destroyed. Although the torrents were contributed by them as well, I suppose.

At this point, saying that a site is difficult to code for is not really an excuse. I'm sure it is a complex undertaking, but really, it's been a looooong time, and the site ran pretty well before -- back before the problems. If the admins could put up such an excellent site in the first place, they could debug it if they really wanted, which leads one to believe they aren't really trying to fix anything.

The admins need to be more transparent about the site. It relies heavily upon the community which it serves for its content, and it hasn't been treating that community very well of late.

And yes capnjibs ,you're sick and totaly hopeless .Well ,it's easy to stand by ur friend's side and say "you will be fine soon" when (s)he is sick ,but try to be sick and say that to yourself ...
And for careless ,have ya ever try to install & update our gallery ?So that you will know how many bugs there are in our gallery ... ,that's why we need to upgrade ,and you guess that .... ,when upgrade the mod ,it wiped out all of our current gallery ...>.< .Well ,you could say that :why ya didnt back up the gallery ?. Yes ,I admit that our error from the first time that we didnt back up the gallery before updating ... but ,it's easier to talk than to do it ... Back up to where ?We have only one ~75Gb disk and it's such a huge gallery ,and only GOD might know our gallery will be wiped our when updating ....
Finnally ,if you guys dont have any contributing ideal ,just shut up and let Shragei works for the new gallery .

Photopost wasn't working right in the first place. It wasn't handling the hash password in the cookies right forcing const relogin.
Unfortunately that doesn't work well with proprietary software. VB and photopost license states one instance of the software no more, so testing isn't an option.
