Okay here is an odd situation I have. My hard drive 40gig ibm deskstar will not start at all. Everything is connected correctly , but still it will not start and it is not listed in the bios. And when it does start I get a long physical memory dump message. In that message it say to disable bios shadowing but when I go into the bios there is no option to disable bios shadowing and I have found bios shadowing.
Tried reformating the drive on one of the rare occasions it did start but about half way through the drive decided to turn off and got a message saying not able to read device.
Any suggestions or help?
I think it's fried, not much you can do, try pcdoctor if you got it, will tell you if the hdd is fried or not.

If your drive is really fried, there is still an option if you want to get your data back, but it'll cost some serious money.
You can go to Drive Savers (http://www.drivesavers.com/recovery_tips/pc_users.html) to look up some hints for recovering your hard drive, and if all else fails, you can have them send someone over to recover all of your data (Hopefully), although it will cost you.
Something similar has happened to my hard drive before. I just stuck my hard drive in the freezer overnight, (which does something to help, but only temporarily) and then quickly started it up and backed up everything.
Hope any of that helps.

Reson to all your question are!
Your power supply are not enough wattage, this happen when you have many other hardware install on a single power supply, to test if your power suply is realy running under power is to remove some of your hard-drive or cdrom and boot the system up again if your harddrive spin and constincely sweeping then it might of your hardware fault, or your power regulation damage and need to be replace for more wattage, this happen in most case.. but post the reply and i'll try to help out..

Power supply not being enough wattage might be it I do not know for sure what it is but it is from 150 to 200 watts. I had a single hard drive one cd-rw 52x32x52 and one floppy drive. Cpu 733 celeron 128mb ram .Virtual memory was set to 1000mb . Tried reformating XP using NTFS full got to about 43% than stalled. 98se fdisk got to about 57% of verifying intergrity than stalled. Used Pc doctor everything else looks okay could not finish the hard drive tests reasons unknown though before stalling it came up with a bunch of ECP errors(whatever that is) most of them near the start of the hard drive leaving me to think something happened to the boot sector.
Than there are the other times when the drive is not even listed in the bios.
Thanks for the help.

ill go with what navan said, since after is been pick up by your pc it turns off and gives you the blue screen. try connecting it in another powercord from the power supply.
i got this same type of error not so long ago since the PSu i bought is 300watts and the one i was using was 400watts. either that or the HD might be fried.
mine currently is connected with 2 Hardrive, radeon pro & a dvd-r.
had to take one of my HD off. :(
if thats the case try buying a new PSU..

Now you know why Deskstars are nicknamed Deathstars. :p :D
There's even a class action lawsuit. :p :D

Maybe you're eligible for a settlement claim. :p

I agree it might not be getting enough power, but if you remove a few devices and it still doesn't work then PM me and I can send you some floppy images for fixing hard drive problems, it may just need a low level format. Worst case scenario it has a scratched platter or the board on the drive is fried. I hope you can resolve this problem.

Well sort of fixed it found a small drive for the time being that works until I decide on what hard drive to buy. And for the low level format and your offer to send a floppy image for fixing hard drives thanks but I already have a few of those programs. None of them will work if your hard drive does not show up in the bios.
That hard drive is dead looking now for a new hard drive.

I have three hard drives in boxes, 3g, 40g, 200g all fried. Being on 24/7 I have found that they start humming after 3 years and then fail. If you start hearing a hum or whinning noise start backing up the data. They all gave warning before they went out though, errors screens asking to do disk checks was the first warning. Hope this helps, never tried to fix a fried HD, I just bought 250G from frys for 59 each.

with windows 98 i used to have to go to the bios and have it look for it, my hmm guess motherboard didnt auto install my hard drives. u had to do it yourself . might give it a try. cant hurt as its broken. nother way u pop it in an external hard drive usb case and see if words in that. i use a 200 gig as a back up for when my drives are full (and they always full!!)
