Hi guys, I would post this topic in the help and suggestion thread but I'm not sure so if its ok, i'll just post it here.

Well recently, i've been considering getting a mp3 player however, I find myself in a dillema. I don't know whether to get an ipod or and iriver. The reason that I am confused is because of the functions that both provide, I just want a mp3 player around 5 gbs, so I'm not really intending to buy the more expensive ones.
I find that the ipod only stores and plays music and stores photos/pictures but you cannot view them. Where as, the iriver allows that function, has a fm radio included, and can record voices (which does attracts me), however is the quality of the product good?

Can anyone share their thoughts and comments on this? Much appreciated.

If I may, I would also recommend taking a look at the Rio Carbon:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855101118
It has a lot more format support than other players on the market, 20 hour battery life, and built in mic, not to mention the stellar after-sale support. :p

The H10's not nearly as widespread due to iRiver's lack of a major advertising campaign, but here are a few reviews (professional, and end user):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16855150042

So in short, good deal. Just be sure to download the firmware update. :p

If it were me I'd get it solely based on the price. :p

If you care about sound quality a lot, you might just want to ditch everything and go Creative. After all, they do make the best sound cards. :p

The iPods suffer quite a bit in comparison to Creative's Zen, the Dell seems to do "ok". :p

Rio Audio and iRiver also have very good sound quality, but that shouldn't be surprising considering their experience in making CD players for so many years.

Silly me, almost forgot. Don't bother with the iPods, more hype than substance, not to mention the price gouging and ****y audio quality. Ironic isn't it? They become the monopoly in MP3 players and they become just like Microsoft and start slacking off on quality, go figure. :p

^^ lol.
I own an older flash based 128mb iriver and I don't regret purchasing it at all. I still use it for work-out purposes. Iriver is always ahead of the pack so I recommend them...they are the best. The ipods are too mainstream now...everybody owns one. Sidenote, I think iriver is a Sweedish or Finnish company.

Actually, iRiver is a Korean company. :D

It was founded in 1999 by parent company ReignCom. :p :D

One thing you might want to think about it how you use it.
Is is gonna sit on a desk?
Excersise with it?
Because Flash players (iRivier) are more sturdy, than a Hard drive player (iPod, i think).

Totally agree with the result, though I didn't hear much differance in performance while comparing with a (rather obscure) Creative DMP LX 100, which sounds crappier than a Zen

The Shuffle's good EXCEPT that it can't withstand much pressure from the top (shock is OK) for a flash player. Maybe because it's too thin? The USB's not too good either. A friend of mine had a Shuffle die on him after 1 week, and had to send it back to the States. Took another 3 weeks to return.

I'd also want a screen. I need to see what's coming up so I can quickly skip tracks should I not be in the mood for something. Think sudden changes like "peaceful piano solo track" to "Linkin Park".

As mentioned, the Zen has THE best sound in the business for micro-drive players at the moment (bass doesn't taper off), and is relatively cheaper than the competition. However.....

My personal gripes with the Zen: The earphone-grip of it's jack is very poor. Navigation is also crappy: There's no search function (though few players have it too) so you'll have to sift through the list alphbetically.

The touchpad is a tad too sensitive too. However, a certain novel way of providing the player with scratch protection that I read somewhere (putting the player in a baseball card protector/card sleeve) reduces sensitivity to an acceptable standard on "Low Sensitivity"

I had the same debate before with and Ipod and Iriver, in the end I got the Iriver due many reasons. As you said before about the FM radio and can record voices too. I tried the Ipod first and didn't like how the simplicity of the files storage and stuff it looks too much to do and I had twirling my finger around. It doenst have is a built in microphone which Iriver has. Ipod wants you to buy more accessories. As for the I river they have a built in microphone. Of course i needed it for lectures and such. Im not sure if ipod has this but my Iriver has a line in line out so you can play it anywhere in your car, home stereo, computer, and you can even record stuff from any thing with the line in, out cable.
-Another reason is the quality of the iriver. I first used a friends Iriver Flashdrive player with T100 series and it was quite easy to use too. So with the credibility on their lowest model I had a strong insight of the Harddrive player too.
-Ipod had I tunes Iriver WMA, but who cares about that. I won't pay for my mp3s rather rip them from CDs That I own or download them.
-Iriver is an Korean company such that there are no restrictions on such compliances stuff and stuff that american company has. Though mines is an american model it has some locked features; which has yet to be unlocked.
-The new Iriver models can be plugged in to any computer and will read it as a Remote drive and you do not need to install anything or any software, like creative and others, Ipod can also do the same but i am not sure about windows.
THe model I have i was discontinued. It is an H300 multi codec jukebox. At first I just wanted for the mp3s, FM radio, recording, etc until i found out about the new firmware which allows you to play any video format with a 3rd party conversion. A year after Ipod Video came out. You could buy the H300 series on ebay but for aroudn 200-300 bucks or even more.

About the H10 series there are some huge doubts. It is not multicodec, but with firmwares and such it might be a possibility. If you need more info on iRiver which out www.misticriver.net

Hope this helps.

why not get a creative zen vision??? ^_^

i got one ~ nya

its a bit big tho... but i really like the 3.7in screen

if you want something a little smaller... get the zen vision:m

though both are really thick... a lil thicker than a 1 cm

but the screens are really beautiful~~~

over 164,000 colors compared to ipod's lousy 65k
