Oh dear , two encoding groups have been mistaken for subbers :)

From a personal viewpoint, I have liked both Frothbite and Triad's recent work, as well as their choice of stuff and the amount of background work they put in (i.e. notes etc.)

I don't tend to do text translation comparisons between the groups, but for getting stuff out there damn quick and in decent sub-quality I think Anime Council deserves a mention too.

Others for pure translation quality and attention to detail regardless of how long it takes... probably Ishin and Lunar.

Other than that, the stuff on Slayerjammer's list is all vote-worthy for quality too in my book.

I think its difficult to pick out the top 10, since subbing has so many of them. Not to mention some groups only specialise in speed subbing. And i noticed a few groups listed that have been mistaken for fansubers that arent :)

Also there are a few groups who only do 1 or 2 shows, where as others tend to do more. For example Aniome Keep and Lunar have loads of projects, and i kinda feel this causes slow releases since their members are stretched really thin.

Anime Empire and Anime Yuki however do put out some exceptional work, and most of my anime lately comes from them.

Yeah, L-E made a really positive impression on me with Full Moon. Princess Tutu was another great sub but I can't quite remember who did it... Sure has changed a lot since my day, I'd be lucky to get my hands on a script with even just one of the songs translated. Kinda bugs me how a lot of guys like to stick their logo in the corner throughout the whole show but I guess that's how it is now.

Animeone and Anime-Kraze are my top 2, and from there I usually compare the first few eps with a couple of groups. I've found the following groups usually produce good quality episodes.

I'll also sometimes check out this list: http://afkanistan.co.nr/afkanapproved.txt when deciding on a group to pick if the series is on there.

Some other good groups that have decent to good quality: Lunar, Anime-Faith, Froth-Bite, Ishin, Live-Evil, and too many for me to list. Usually I pick from the above list, with a couple of exceptions.

I won't watch logo'd shows - if a sub-group is so arrogant as to think it has a right to spoil a show by logoing it all the way through then I can't imagine the quality of the subbing will be top-level.
While we're on the subject of the best subbing groups though, I've just looked back over everyone's choices, and it just goes to show how subjective these things are. I suppose it depends on your criteria: speed of releases, accuracy, sub typeface, format (AVI, MKV etc) - the list goes on. What is clear though is that the subbing community has a lot of high-quality groups, as attested by the output of the twenty or so listed in the replies here. However, there are also a fair number of downright poor groups (no I'm not going to name anyone - you'll find out if you ever try their work) and I have to wonder why they bother some of the time. That said, some of the poorer groups do release stuff which no other groups have touched, so it's a case of poor subs better than no subs I suppose.....

I've been getting lots of good stuff from StaticSubs (SS) lately. There are still many other good groups like Anime Kraze, Triad, Anime-Keep, Anbu, Lunar, Froth-Bite and others I can't think of right now.
However, the quality often varies from series to series, so your best bet is to look at some fansub quality comparisons (e.g. the one at Ultima's page (http://ultima.hafio.info/)) to see for yourself which version is the best.

Not really able to list 10 but there's quite a few that I m quite sure should be in the list top fansubs.

Anbu, Lunar, AonE, L-E r good. They have been doing a great job, always look forward to their releases, trusted their quality. ;)

if we're talking about fansubs and not DVD rips like kickassanime (they're good though), i think anykraze is the best at least of those i know.

A-keep. they are really good, but to slow to release
Lunar Anime. Quite fast and standar quality
Anbu. never got anything from them but still i think they do a great job
Anime Empire. One of the best i think ^^
The Triad. Also one of my favorites, though they should be more selectable about the series they sub.

Others i don't remenber or i'm just to lazy to keep writing ^^

Zhentarim do have a tracker, but only have around a dozen releases running at any one time. They do change them occasionally (about 1 replaced every 2 weeks or so).

hey babel, can you name some groups that logo their shows? I'd like to know as its one of those things I rarely encounter. it has sparked my interest and now I need to watch a logo'd show :D let's hope my experience will be a entertaining one

I have respect for every subber in the fansub community with a few exceptions. As a
former fansubber, I've gotten to know a few really arrogant people unfortunately. I still
believe that everyone in the community are great people though. They all go out of their
way to provide a wonderful service for thousands of people around the world.

I think the best encoders overall but generally slow are Anime-Kraze, Animeone, ANBU, and Lunar. my fav. quick fansubs are shinsen-subs cuz they seem to release all the popular anime I want hella fast.
