View Full Version : Why do OPs/EDs sound better when they're TV size?

Im currently hearing Negima OP and it just sounds worse than the TV version, the extra tunes in this full version just doesn't feel 'right' for this song. Its not only this song which has a 'butchered' full version, things like Chrono Crusade's OP was very good but when full version came out, the middle bit of the song was 'dreadful'.
Gantz's OP is extremely good, btu the full version was way too messy for me

Oh well, i just wanted to vent this out :P

It's true that the tv sized ones sound better because there isn't any "Filler" but i find it annoying only getting about 1:30 a song, so i just accept the occasional out of place guitar solo or whatever.

One reason is : you have the animation with the OP TV version, while the fill-up version don't have any (most of us won't have such great imagination to get an image for the fill-up version). :p

sometimes they put different parts of the song together. LIke the middle then the end.

They do? I much prefer the full version of the Openings for Dear Boys, Twin Spica, Fruits Basket, Oh my Godess TV, Scrapped Princess, Condor Hero and the ending of Someday's Dreamers and Ai Yori Aoishi (THE INDIGO FOREVER!!)

nah, even without the animation and things, i still prefer the TV versions, the only thing that keeps me coming back to full length versions is the length.

Its like they put the best bit of the song in the anime and fill the rest of the song with a repeat of the TV size and then a minute of filler tunes, which feels out of place.

well it is scientific reason
in tracks.....audio mp3 or whatever there is a small sound in the deep
in hz that we can berely hear that sound is not random it is produced when the recording hapens and it used for better hearing and for not confusing ur brain and making us have headage letter
in tv versions the analysys of the wave of the sound is differnt and is other kind of hz
that make it feel like it is other song and feels different to some better to others worse
but the imagination of the opening/ending makes it better

sry for my bad english (i suck at it )

Well there's several ways of looking at it:
1. You have great memories of listening to the short version WITH the video
2. The song is crap without the video
3. Simply put, the filler is even worse and you don't have the video
For example, "Let Me Be With You". Chobits OP.

If it's an opening/ending you like enough to not fast forward past it, then you might listen to it upward of ten or even twenty times before you hear the full length version. After this, youtend to know the song really well, and if you're like me, you'll even sing along to it, even if you're someone who doesn't read/write/speak japanese (eg. me...hooray for karaoke subs!). When you do hear the full length version of the song, you get thrown off because you're constantly expecting the next note or word to be what you've heard from the show. If you like to sing along (like me) then you'll probably sing the wrong thing or at the wrong time, making you feel pretty damn stupid (like me). I think this is why most remixes and covers of great songs are completely crap.
Aside from that...
Some full length songs seem to sound just like the tv version for the first minute and a half, but then radically switches direction, so it feels like a completely different song.
If there are verses not in the tv version, then, unless you know japanese or you look up the lyrics, you have no idea what they're singing about. It's like a tourist has just walked up to you and has started singing at you. (Personally, I think it'd be pretty damn funny)
Plus I agree with most of what's already been said. Personally, I usually prefer the full versions, partly because they're longer, but mostly because they usually have an extra element to them (like how they can add emphasis through pauses or buildup to a point because they have time to spare).

Anyway, my favourite opening song is "The Selected Moon" from Tsukihime which only has one version so in this case, none of this matters.

ps. Is there an extended version of "The Selected Moon" (aka "The Sacred Moon"). There are a couple of other songs on the soundtracks with some elements of it, but has there been a proper extended version of it released, like a single?

Sad to say but no. Which makes sense since this song was made especially for the opening only unlike the ending theme which was done by some else but fitted perfectly with the show.

As to the original question, like everyone else have said, the picking of the best parts of the song usually is what the animators do to fit how the opening video will look like. For ex. the opening to the second Naruto OP where everything in the video coresponded with the beats to the song.

For me full versions will be always better than TV sized songs, for example:comparing full sized "Lilium" from Elfen Lied to it's TV sized format.

Full songs that just extends the op bugs me (You know paly the whole op size first then add other crap later to make a full song or the reverse order).

Like chank09 said, they sometime goes in a whole diffent direction. It's like they never really intended to make a full song, but when the show got popular, they just made shit up so they could release an OP/ED single.

It depends on the song. Some have better TV Size (see Bleach ~Asterisk), some have better singles.

I still listen to the full versons generally because of the list and that some of the stuff from the TV version is retained in the full version, but imo, the tv versions just sound much better without the crappy filler that is generally filled in.

The OP past Episode 5 of Negima is radically different than the Full Version on the OP Single - compare the two side by side. My thinking is they're going to change it every 4 episodes so they can sell differnet versions of the OP, each on their own single.

Brilliant bastards.

its the same thing just they "modify"(cutting or changing the places) to make a big effect with the scenes that apperar on the op... and the japanese full musics is like 4:40~6:00 min that is big so thats y tv versions is better.. its shorter.. i like some tv versions, like full moon(wtf a guy who like full moon musics!?Oo) tv version musics the full version make me so boring to listen bcuz that have 5min or near it

As what Fillninthe______ has says, the main reason should be that they put only the best part of the song as the OP. They want to cut out as much as possible because it a waste of time and each second cost them a lot.
It is true, if we have seen the anime, and saw the OP, when ever we hear the music, our mind will try to link the OP video. And, of course, the picture and and song does not match. That can be one of the reasons for some people to feel that the full version isn't as good as the TV size

Personally, I prefer the full version more than the TV size (^^!)
