If by "hard" you mean something like Disturbed or Korn; i don't know of any bands that sound like that. But a few of my favorite bands are:
Luna Sea
Pierrot
Kagrra
D'espairs Ray
Buck Tick
Oh, if you want heavy stuff Dir en Grey and Moi Dix Mois are great places to start. Alice 9, Zinkaku Radio, Miyavi, Metronome, Deadman, hide, (anything at all by hide), doremi dan and Kozi are all pretty good. Especially Honey Vanity by Kozi. Kagrra and Inugami circus are more tradional `japanese` sound. J-rock is pretty large though depending on what your favourite genre is and how attached you are to style, (visual indies), over sound, (punk/metal).

I love X
Does anybody know where I can find good taps for X?
Guitar Pro has some pretty good ones, you have to use their program, but you can get the tabs from it once it`s installed

I would suggest Dir en Grey, L'Arc en Ciel, SONS OF ALL PUSSYS(a.k.a SOAP), X-Japan....
Dir en Grey - Death Metal-like music that really hits the spot somehow
L'Arc en Ciel - Wide range of music here that can really fit almost anywhere (compare "anata" and "the nepenthes" n u know what i mean..)
S.O.A.P - hahaha! just give a listen! they really make me laugh! :D (btw, its a side project of L'Arc en Ciel's guitarist if u didnt already know ;) )
X-Japan - Legendary...
they're many more but these are my recommendations for those new to JRock

Definitely X Japan, they are the Gods of J-rock in my opinion. I also like Luna Sea, and B'z.

Best bands I know of (not that I know many), if you want harder J-Rock songs:
D'espairsRay, Dir en grey and some of Gazette's songs are pretty heavy (though most I've heard aren't - some of their songs are very heavy compared to the first two I mentioned..the singer has a very cool roar when he tries :P). I've heard one song literally like 5 minutes ago by a band called Gimick that was ace, the song sounded a bit like old Dir en grey mixed with new Dir en grey. :P I need to find some of their stuff...
I've tried X-Japan but it seemed more of their songs were ballads than proper rock songs (which were fairly metally and pretty cool)...I have a few of their albums so any song recommendations for the rockier ones?
Oh another band worth trying are 12012, they're fairly good too...

the answer to your question is yes. hip hop and rap are popular in japan. ignore the fools who say no.
and as for j-rock, i would have to go with the mad capsule markets and guitar vader.

doctor//GENETIC:
hip-hop artists I can recommend: rip slyme, kick the can crew and home made kazou.
chompy: the mad capsule markets are good, I've never heard guitar vader, I'll look for it.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Malice Mizer. If you don't know them then you haven't lived as a J-rock fan.

You probably want to add a few of the bands below as well:
Asian Kung-Fu Generation (Rock)
Dragon Ash (Rock and Rap)
M-Flo (More Rap)
Orange Range (Rock and Rap)
Trax (More Rock)
Wrecking Crew (More Rock)
Yellow Monkey (Rock)
Hope that helps out too. ^_^
Cheers,

i would definately suggest the following (alot of agreements with previous lists)
Asian Kung-Fu Generation
Dragon Ash
L'Arc en Ciel
Luna Sea (although i don't have as much interest in them as i used to)
Hitomi (kinda popish, but it's still rock IMO)
The Pillows (punk rock, i think...)
