I was wondering if anyone here at Hongfire plays/played/or would like to play an instrument of any sort.
Personally I play the violin and used to play the piano. An instrument I'd like to play is the Cello or Flamanco on the the guitar.

Hi!, I used to play guitar a few years ago, but lost the habit and now I play it fairly decent. That the only instrument I know.

You should, you'll never know if your good at something or not if you never try. Violin, kinda bad choice to begin playing. To me it's still pretty hard and I had a pretty good knowledge of music and my dad was my teacher. But once you've learned to play something you like it's fun and you feel proud that you've finally are able to do it.

I want to play the piano like a master pianist, because when I was little my grandparents made me play the piano even though I didn't like it, and for hours. Then one day, I just lost interest, long time ago that was. LOL. I starting to want to play it again and re-enter the world of piano playing. yah!

eh?? Shouldn't this be part of the general music discussion (http://www.hongfire.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=39)?
Aw well, anywho used to play the trumpet back in the days and mysteriously a bit of basic piano too. I kinda lost interest after the about a good five years with my trumpet skills, but it can't be helped if I don't like anymore...
I was pretty good too... and it was a kinda a suprise for my friends to know that I quit...
EDIT: eh... whoops... I gave you the wrong link :o But now it's fixed :)

I play the trumpet, guitar, and bass. I'm can play a little piano. I used to want to play drums... I like to play jazz stuff, rock, and anything else I find cool. Right now I'm trying to learn some of Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan on my guitar. I also wanna learn the trumpet part to Spanish Flee by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass Band, don't ask why.

I'm a member of the guitarmy as well, and I played violin for four years and I'm not really sure why I stopped that, it was fun and I wasn't too bad. Currently guitar is the only thing I seriously play though (not in a band or anything, but I play a lot). Oh yeah, I played clarinet for half a year in grade school but quit because it was too easy...and I owned a recorder once, does that count?

Lately I have been "playing" some Bach on guitar. I want to learn "Toccata & Fugue" on guitar if it is even possible. It is played super-fast.
I am looking for a good ocarina. I like the smooth sound. I need a new instrument that is soft sounding.
I play the guitar or as i'd like to call it, my axe. And before somebody says well EVERYBODY plays the guitar, NOW THEY DONT!!! It is a matter of opinion. Usually people say "you can't play guitar" because they don't like the style of the other person. I think it is in the ear of the beholder. If you can play some chords or notes, then I say, yes you can play guitar, Even If I think that their style is crude.
As far as nowadays go, less people spend time learning the intricacies of learning guitar. The guitar has so much potential, and many artists now do not explore them.

I used to play the trumpet, when I was in elementary school..... I was actually somewhat good at it, too.
But then my instrument broke during a move, and it never got replaced.
Don't ask me to play anything for you now..... It's been at least 15 years since I last played a note.
But if there was any instrument I would love to learn how to play more than anything else, I'd have to say the guitar.

Like so many others out there, I play guitar. My sister has a saying 'everyone and their uncle plays guitar'. It runs in my family though... My dad plays, my sister plays (started out on guitar, mostly plays bass now), and I play as well.
We all have different genres of music that we enjoy playing... my dad is mostly older mainstream rock kind of stuff, my sister is more into heavier rock and alternative, while I am into blues (stuff like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins, BB King, etc).
My axes of choice are my Tele and Strat hooked into a Fender Twin amp for playing blues stuff. If I am ever in the mood for playing rock, I use a Gibson Les Paul coupled with a Peavey 5150 II head & 5150 slant cab.
I've played bass before, and could play it if I had to, but I don't enjoy it that much.

I played piano for three or four years. We subsequently had to get rid of our piano when moving to a smaller house, but I've really missed being able to play it. I utterly adore the instrument, and will gladly return to playing it when I've got a place of my own, and the money to afford a piano of my own.
As for wanting to learn something... I've always wanted to learn how to play the flute.

Lets take punk music as a big example of what i meant. Punk music primarily started as a rebellion against classic rock/metal because they were too tired of trying to live up to having to put out brain pulverizing solos and what not. At first i used to liek punk, the whole rebellion thing. But after a while of playing guitar and finding out what playing a guitar meant, i saw MOST punk guitarists as lazy which makes a HORRIBLE guitarist. Now there are a few good ones out there but only a few. Back to my point, after so many years of kids growing up listening to punk type music, they dont really strive to be a great guitarist; to really learn how to PLAY the guitar. Many of you will think that im full of crap but im not. :p Ive jammed with MANY guitarists of many different genres of music and i always feel the same. Now i know im not a great guitarist, but at least im trying to be and i dont play the same dang power chords over and over and over again. Even my guitar teacher which has been playing for about 40 yrs agrees with me. We are just tired of people learning a few chords and pretending they are the shit on guitar and being compared to them.
I want to learn how to use synthesizers and turntables, that is, if you count them as instruments.

I can only play the piano / keyboard. But I haven't played in a few weeks.
I need to go back and practice again.
I used to play a lot of cello and piano until I graduated high school... I was pretty hardcore with cello. (former member of Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, among other things)
My skill must be in the sh*tter by now, though... All those years of effort and money going to waste. *sigh*

My musical talent equals my drawing talent. Meaning I have neither. I love to be able to play any instrument and draw anything that looks even close to what I was trying to draw. So far all that remains a dream. However, I'm not giving up and I'm trying hard to draw so I practice a lot. As for a musical instrument, I'm gonna try my hands at either piano or violin. So I guess the only instrument I can play is my voice box. Dunno whether I'm any good at even that.. hehehe...

Wow, lots of strings players out here. (Boo! Hehe) I play the Clarient (played from Contra Alto to the standard B-flat) and very little piano. I'm so biased towards the Treble clef that I have a hard time doing the whole multi-clef thing. That and I have no rhythm, but that's besides the point. =D
As for any instruments that I would like to know how to play, I would have to say any of the brass instruments. I mean, how cool is it to make farting noises and have music come out?

Transposing is done to make music available to instruments it originally wasn't written for. My instrument the alt sax is an e flat (Eb) instrument but most music is written for c instruments like a piano. So when I play notes that were meant for a c instrument it sound all wrong. To solve this the notes have to be heightened or lowered in accordance to which class (c/b flat/e flat/etc) you

Oh okay, I understand now. It's just that my friend plays guitar and sometimes he has to play scales in different octaves I think. My father said that it was people who played in band because they can adjust to the pitch.

Really? Would you know anywhere to get any good anime music for violin. Also the violin in my opinion is overrated. I play it but don't like it all that much anymore. Playing classical gets boring but that's about the only that sounds good when playing it. Also you have to get into the higher levels if you really want to impress people and that sometimes can take months to a year just to learn one song.

Well,I'm not sure where to get .But when i listen to the music .The roles usually is violin .One of the music composer i like is Yuki Kajiura for most of the song .She use violin solo in the song for gundam seed ,hack sign, noir and maybe more .
Well, its true that you much reach certain level to impress people .I have to say even you yourself would not impress when you listen to your sound if you play at low level .Recommend at least a grade 5 to have a good sound .^^
I think you can get some of the song in www.animescores.com .Some of it you had to transpose since it is piano .Usually i would just listen and play .I'm a lazy man to find scores .^^
Though the song is for violin solo ,as long as you want to ,you still can always play it in another instrument(just as what i did to feel the melody^^)

I forgot to mention I play the ukulele! I bought a decent one in Hawaii. It wasn't one of those cheap ones people sell everywhere for like 10 - 20 dollars. I bought the second cheapest one they had at the store I went to. It's made of mahogany wood, one step above plywood. I can't find a lot to play on it. I only found one good site for tabs and it didn't have a wide selection... It's fun though. I have a small book of hawaiian songs and I mess around with stuff. Last thing I tried to play on it was Black Dog by Led Zeppelin. I couldn't play all of it, but if I work on it I could probably get it to sound alright. The only thing I hate is that there isn't a much of a range on it.

I don't know I don't really like animescores all that much because the person who writes those scores doesn't transpose them all that well. She's missing a few things like in some songs she forgets the slurs, the forte, piano, pizzicato and some other techniques that are included in the song when you listen to it. But thanks anyways.

I played piano for a few years in elementary school and was good enough at it but I dropped it to learn guitar. I didn't get started on that right away, but I've been doing it for four years now and have started giving lessons myself. I sometimes figure out anime themes to play, the Trigun opening comes to mind as a fun one to do, but I've never looked for scores myself, sorry. Mostly I play progressive rock and jazz, with some blues and straight ahead rock thrown in, as well. Since a couple other of you guitarists have mentioned your gear, I'll say that I play a Music Man Petrucci Signature(shown in my avatar) and an Ibanez Artcore TM71(semi-hollow jazz guitar) through a Mesa Boogie Nomad 45 2X12 combo that I got a few months ago. I've always liked the drums, and would consider learning them as well as electric bass to be a more rounded modern player. If I were to learn the violin, I would definitely get an electric violin, because those sound amazing in a modern rock or fusion context; running through an amp with some gain they have a terrific and smooth lead sound.

I play piano and violin. Since I am a music major (junior at the university), I'm actually pretty good (piano is my main instrument). Trombone for 6 years, then currently still beats on drums from time to time. And heres one for ya......the BUGLE! Oh yeah, now thats a tough one to master. I like listening to guitar. I play the violin so it's refreshing to listen to a good guitar solo or some flamenco. But how can you define playing a guitar? Like just some chord enough to play Slayer or something or some actual technique required?

Theres ALOT that goes inot actually playing the guitar. And no, just knowing some slayer doesnt mean u can PLAY the guitar, even though i do love me some slayer. :p First, you should be able to play with four fingers, (pointer to pinky) on the fret baord with ease. Second, you should know quite a bit of guitar theory like harmony and how many intervals are in each note. Also knowing chords and scales helps alot. Being able to read sheet music is also a must because 95% of guitar tabs out there have quite a few flaws in them. On a side note, being able to play fats and play a solo does nto make you a good guitarist. It takes more than that, it also depends on what you are playing, wheather it be rock, classical, blues, or jazzy riffs. Although, if you can play good solos and fast it most likely means you at least have the potential to be a greta guitarist if you already are not one. I play "lead" guitar in a classic metal band which requires me to play the solos, BUT i dno just play metal. I love learning classical pieces such as Beethoven's 5th and Fur Else on my axe as well. Also, Id say abotu 90% of guitarists out nowadays can NOT play guitar well enough to save their life.

haha, if iven a choice i would like to master piano..
the wonderful chords in a piano and the piano trainings itself will train u to pick out the tunes.. therefore, i have a feeling that if u have degree in piano u can play almost any instruments..
besides, with the electronic piano nowadays, u can play over 100 of instrument just on that device *switch to violin sounds and start playing*.. imagine u'll be creating midi tones, w00t! games tones, ringtones, almost anything! record them down and u can start uploading "Dragonball remix", "Key games (piano)".. *dreams with sparkling eyes*
Well I know how to play piano a little, although my hands aren't to handy to both play a different tune.
Plus I want to play the guitar - electric, that'd be awesome.

Regarding the topic, I started piano when I was in 4th grade and continued for a couple years and hated it. Was happy when my teacher quit to take a full time job as a band director. Then in high school, played the flute (don't ask) and then immediately switched to the Tuba :). Also it was around the time I joined band I started playing piano again and LOVED IT. What got me playing again was my friend introducing me to X-Japan and I wanted to learn how to play that intro to Silent Jealousy. So yeah......PIANO r0x0rz!!

Yeah, if ever I got the chance to learn a string instrument I would also like play the violin. Next to the piano, I think the violin has the second most beautiful sound. Speaking of the violin, anyone familiar with the female string quartet called Bond (http://www.bondmusic.net/)? Not only are they hotsauce, but they can really play. ;) :p :D Music is pretty cool too, its like classical meets the electronic musics

After 2 years of collecting dust, I finally pulled out my guitars again, mostly thanks to BECK. I have to kind of relearn all the basics since I forgot them all, and I have to learn the Electric technics from 0, Since I've only played Clasical guitar.
I have really shitty guitars (But dispite that, I still like them) A Yamaha CG-40A that probably goes for less than 50 bucks now (But people say this one sounds buetiful compared to other 40a's, good enough for free), and a Aria STG-Series that I got as a birthday present. It was only 100 bucks I think, but fine enough for a noob like me. To bad I didn't bring the Amp with me, it was the cheapest of the washburns, but it had enough ring to annoy the nieghbours.
Between the years I've also been trying to play the Bass. Jacked a Essex hand made (no idea what this is) off a friends friend, and now the friend who gave it to me wants it back. Probably will give it back, but I aint shipping something that heavy back to Thailand.

I have tried these instruments,
- Recorder (wooden flute), you had to start with that one in school...
- Clarinet, but I really wanted to play Oboe at that time, and I think I still do.
- Violin, newbies playing violin - Gee!!!
- Flute, got quite good at it...
- Guitar (accu. & elec.), hmmm...
- Elec. bass, better...only 4 strings :), had a 5 string one too...
- Keyboard, all types since the Moog :), still have my Ensoniq VFX-SD...
Now I'm only singing.
But if I ever manage to visit Scottland - I will buy a bagpipe :)
Very cool sound!

I was reminded of something. I'll most likely never learn how to play this instrument, but the Indian Sitar I thought was pretty freakin cool. I took this music class where we studied various "Musics of the World". We watched a video about the music and instruments of India and I was amazed watching a performance by Ravi Shankar. That guy really whales and tears it up on the Sitar!! :D :D
For those who are curious, here is a picture of Ravi Shankar his Sitar:

My current passion is elecric bass. Got my first taste of a live band performance at a club and now I don't want to let go. Haha
Earlier in life I took piano lessons for a few years. I didn't like it too much and gave it up. Every now and then i get the urge to play something on piano but I can hardly remember any of the songs I learned. Eh.... at least it will be useful whenever I get around to composing songs.
This doesn't really count, but I've learned to play the drum part for one of my band's songs. I sort of suck stupid bass pedal >:|
I think it would be cool to learn double bass or guitar. But double bass is too big and guitar looks sort of complicated... darn extra strings!

I play the Electric guitar. It's hooked up to a 24 inch screen and I can play lots of songs from a bunch of Japanese bands. hehehe.
Yea, the only musical instrument I am REMOTELY good at is Gita dora (Guitar Freaks And Drum Mania)
I'd loved to be able to play any instrument I lay my hands on but alias my creativity is only in computers. Programing, Graphics, and Gaming. And even then the music is never my own. Remember to thank your lucky stars that your hands still work. A women came into my work a few days ago that had broken both her hands and she was a Pianist.(I think that how you spell it.)
i play the classical guitar for self entertainment and my music library is all about finger picking. i used to play the flute but now ... = ="
if possible piano would be great.

That depends on what one means with playing. My main instrument is the guitar, but I can play the piano, ukelele, harmonica, drums, flute and bass even though it may be just the basics. I would really like to learn to play the saxophone, but as I never found a free spot in my economy to buy one it just havent happened.

bass guitar really rocks when played properly!
i myself have been playing electric guitar for over a year now. Mostly pop/rock/metal songs, but i'm also trying to play those crazy prog-metal solo's, which are way too fast though. Oh well, trying to learn chords and stuff is hard enough.

I've played saxophone for 3 years...
I have an acoustic guitar in my basement...I haven't really made much progress with it. I just can't seem to play chords well because my fingers keep touching other strings on the fretbar. I think I just need constant practice...

I played the viola in middle/high school. Little known instrument :O Most people just think I'm saying violin wrong =.= It's like...
violin X 1.2 - high string + low string = viola
lol Yah, slightly bigger with one lower string.. It's got th' strings of a cello (I adore cello ><) but it's not that low in pitch.... so a ceolin sort of. We always got the horrible harmonies, monotonous but difficult to figure out the rhythms... at least it made me better at reading notes?
I want to play either 'lectric or bass guitar... ^^ I think it'd be cool! So cool~

I used to play the saxaphne back when I was in public school. Man it was annoying. I didnt wanna plsy it, I just did it cause I was told to. Ugh,,, I hated it so much. I didnt practice bc I disliked it so much, and then I made an @ss out of myself in band class. I hated it so much, i dreded going to band class. I was told to stay w/ it bc if I dropped out I would need to goto general ed music class, and was told that was harder.... I dunno how much of that true... but man, I hated band class so much...

06-12-2006, 08:38 AM
I played the piano when I was younger, then I stopped. Now, I REALLY regret it. I also believe piano as one of the best instruments because you can solo an entire song and it would still sound pretty damn good by itself.
However, due to my past piano playing experience I am exceeding good at music games where you time notes to button presses (o2jam, pop n music, beatmania).
Other than the piano, I would love to play the shamisen. Simply due to the fact that it sounds authentically asian.

06-12-2006, 08:44 AM
i agree ZuruZuru, anythign sounds good on a piano and i rekon it would be the easiest means of writing music... to play with two hands is almost like having two intruments in itself, where you can hear what the bass notes would sound like with the other notes... if one was a skilled enought player tho..
so in conclusion, i play bass (4-string) and guitar (6-string) and would love to play piano if i could even just get the hang of it... but i can't. a six-string bass would be pretty nice to play too...

I used to play the trumpet about 5 years ago.
I play guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, piano, and clarinet for band class.
I'm currently trying to make an actual CD that I can be proud of.
Unfortunatly, Cakewalk isn't being too cooperative.
I would love to learn how to play violin or cello,
I hear that cellists sometimes use bass guitar strings for practice?
