Just went and seen it. If you are expecting something like Shaolin Soccer, you are half right. There is less comedy and more special effects now. To me, it should have been made into a tv series rather than a movie. Definitely the playing time is too short to do the martial arts moves in the movie justice.

Gee..... the movie was just released, & you want the torrent for this already? The DVD version is not even made yet. Are you one of those "unfortunate" people who can't get to watch this on local theater screen?

Yeah saw it on new years eve, it was very funny, a little bit dark humor. I saw it with English subtitles and ok quality. I'll put on as soon as the tracker is up.

i saw the movie... but i dun think that it was that great... shaolin soccer was way more original... many scenes in Kung Fu Hustle was taken from stephen chow's earlier works but only with special effect this time... the plot was also very thin... i enjoyed the movie nevertheless... :)

uh uh. what's so incredibly funny about it is how he spoofs all the old kungfu movies of the past decades AND pays tribute to them at the same time.

I'm no big movie critic but I love these movies. They're a feel good movie with some kind of nice bundle. Stephen Chow movies are hilarious, as he never feels the need to show people that he's a proffessional or whatever.

And in terms of originality, if you don't consider this original, what do you consider original? Something bundled up in a medieval world?

madness_hero
01-27-2005, 08:41 PM
it's an ok movie.
the comedy was enjoyable, but i don't like it at the end that when Stephen's character turn from zero to hero suddenly and do you guys notice that most of his movies will end with his character living a normal life with the girl that he love?
Kung Fu was an example, then there's Shaolin Soccer and then the late Bai Mien Bao Qing Tien

I think it was matrix like :)

Movie was great..and funny...but too short.

Like many other of his films, only people with adequate Knowledge in Chinese/Cantonese can fully enjoy it, for example the meaning behind Lion's Roar, 火云邪神 or the humor of 神雕侠侣 ('The Condor Couple' or whatever the translation was). But it's not too bad cause Kungfu's more about the action. If you were to watch Stephen Chow's famous 'Journey to the west' or 'Flirting Scholar' with no knowledge of Chinese you'd miss most of the fun.

People had their hopes too high after watching Shaolin Soccer (even though i don't think it's his best movie). Personally, I think Kung Fu Hustle was pretty good. It seemed like the movie was made to bring back the pride of Chinese culture after people claimed he "disgraced" the Chinese by making fun of Shaolin.

I can't complain about this film, I enjoyed it.
I'll admit the plot kind of jumps from place to place.

Something I didn't really understand is the part where Chow is in the Stop Light... uh Thing. While it made more sense later in the film, it's still kind of hazy.

Though I think the choreagraphy(sp?) was excellent in this film.
My favorite battle has got to be between Hexagon Staff vs the Musicians.

I definately agree, quite a portion of the humor in the film is literally lost in translation. But i definately loved the "With great power comes great responsibly bit", got me bursting out there.

I already posted my response in the torrent section on how i feel about this movie but since the torrent section is gone... i guess i can give out my $.02 here. Some say Stephen Chow is Jim Carrey of Asia, well i agree and i disagree. I don't think Chow wants to be Jim Carrey, he's got his own style and jokes, but i agree with the part that he is Jim Carrey of Asia cuz all his movies make BANK.( Jim Carrey Comedy ones at least) I have watched KFH with friends, by myself about 6-7 times and i got the torrent 2 weeks ago, i finished it and although it didn't give me that HOLY CRAP feeling when i finished shaolin soccer, i was very very satisfied. I own pretty much all his movies from 1990 and up and i can say that pretty much in all his movies, he goes from zero to hero. THATS HIS THEME. There are a couple where he starts out strong and finishes strong, but most of his movies he is the underdog and he whoops ass near the end. The formula works for me and no matter how many times i see his movies, it's still fawkin hiliarious. Copied from my other post. I recommend the following movies to you Stephen Chow fans.

Alphabetical order:

1. Chinese Odyssey I Pandora Box 西遊記月光寶盒
2. Chinese Odyssey II Cinderella 西遊記仙履奇緣
3. Fight Back To School 逃學威龍
4. Fight Back To School 2 逃學威龍 2
5. Fight Back To School 2 逃學威龍 3
6. Flirtong Scholar 唐伯虎點秋香
7. Forbidden City Cop 大內密探零零發
8. From Beijing With Love 國產凌凌漆
9. God Of Cookery The 食神
10. Hail The Judge 九品芝麻官
11. King of Comedy 喜劇之王
12. Lawyer Lawyer 算死草
13. Love On Delivery 破壞之王
14. Lucky Guy, The 行運一條龍
15. Royal Tramp 鹿鼎記
16. Royal Tramp II 鹿鼎記II神龍教
17. Sixty Million Dollar Man 百變星君

I recommend watching 7,8,9,10,13 first and then other ones. I have watched them countless times but personally,i can watch all of them over and over again and not get bored. They are all good, some more actiony, some just straight comedy, some part serious...etc etc etc, it's stephen chow, what do you expect?

P.S. i forgot King of Beggar, less comedy, but pretty good fighting scenes.

It was alright, I laughed through the funny scenes, but they've been done before in other movies (like the knife scene), the plot was thin as some already mentioned, probably not my cup of tea when it comes to Yuen Wo-ping style action (like matrix).

Still worthed a watch though, but nothing I'd watch over and over again like Stephen Chow's previous movies.

I liked how Stephen Chow payed tribute to the kung-fu genre by slowly showing the evolution of kung-fu (in movies) throughout the film, beginning was more like 70's style kungfu which was just the heroes whupping endless hordes of people, and was more traditional, the middle was Jacky Chan-ish with the use of props, and a bit of slapstick thrown in, while the end was full-blown Matrix-style CG with peeps in black flying allover the pace...

It's not as good as Shaolin Soccer. But the first half had me in stitches, it truly is hilarious.

Second half doesnt match though, and that final 30 minutes, sheesh, its like Yuen Wo Ping couldnt b bothered, so he just re-used some crappy Matrix Revolutions coreography :(

But i will definitely see it on the big screen when it comes out, dancing gangsters is always a winning formula!

It's sure one of the best movies of Chow ,and I like the story very much - like me now ,Chow stucks between good and bad - he want to do bad things ,but in the very deep of his soul ,he 's just a nice person (and he cant do bad thing at all ).That's the part I like most ,when he rob the girl's money :( .
Try to find it ,my friends, it's really a good movie to watch :)

I saw this movie a few months ago(via torrent....GREAT quality too). Now...I've only seen two other of this guys movies, God of Cookery(FUNNY) and of course Shaolin Soccer. I liked those two movies a lot more than this one. This one is lacking on plot detail, not as funny, but has plenty of good action. Been trying to find some of his other movies, but havent had much luck. Anyway, I wasn't disappointed with the film, but personally I just don't think its as great as his other works.

I think there is room for improvement in this movie especially the story plot. About the comedy part, I admit some parts are pretty funny that I laugh till belly hurt (eg. Lion roar with Loudspeaker, using dagger as rear mirror etc) but some part was rather a mere satisfication for laughter (eg. The Axe gang dancing at the intro) - (I dont think its funny, or rather I think its lame, i dont understand y people at the cinema are laughing).

It gives me the feeling that stephen chow is emphaizing on gong fu action with effects rather with deep humourous comedy plot. A rather disappointing for comedy lovers in my opinion and this movie do not really bring out the "funny acting skills" of stephen chow. ( In fact, he looks quite mature and somehow lack of hilarious action like in the 90's)

I have watched and enjoyed many movies in which he is involved, including this one too, recently. This film has many jokes, from Western to Eastern. However, some allusions require a general understanding of Chinese and the novels by Jinyong.

I liked Bruce Lee movies better than this one - I for one do not appreciate special effects and kung fu together. Nevertheless, this movie is entertaining! And every part with the Axe Gang theme in it is funny, especially the opening, and the one with the hair on fire! However, like Shaolin Soccer, it's only good watching it one time and a half.

04-17-2005, 04:55 PM
Why would you compare a parody of martial arts movies to authentic ones? I'd hate to sound cliche but that's comparing oranges & apples. Otherwise Shaolin Soccer is more then rewatchable because thier Shaolin singing scene never gets old to me.

Randomshinichi

because when the protagonist was kicking ass at the end, his moves really reminded me of Bruce Lee?

KlashedKii
04-18-2005, 01:23 PM
Yeah but it was more than likely intentionally playing on it dude so to say, "Oh Bruce Lee is so much better," is a bit of a killjoy statement don't you think? It's like having a dude get shot with a slab of meat & someone else saying that a bullet is cooler to watch, be careful about seperate tones because that leads to misinterpretation. When something is misinterpreted it just isn't funny is it?

TorrentSpy has it.

They have House of Flying Daggers, too.

I thought it was kinda weird that they decided to make the Axe Gang Leader Guy into basically an extra who existed for the sole purpose of getting killed and opted to make the "Final Boss" the old guy that the main character freed from jail 10 minutes before the end of the movie, but it was fun to watch overall. I especially liked all of the blatant parodies of American movies (namely Gangs of New York and The Shining)

For those of you who watched the theater version in the United States, what's the main language you hear? Cantonese or Mandarin?
The reason is because I watched the version with a mix of these two, and I got two soundtracks alboums of it. Both of them have the same number of tracks, but one version has all Mandarin in the in-between dialogue tracks, the other has Cantonese.

Ether
08-05-2005, 12:31 AM
well, its originally made in cantonese, since i think it was made in hongkong (major cantonese city)

Not too sure about that. A lot of the latest Cantonese movies (including Shao Lin Soccer) incorporate both cantonese and mandarin to reflect the two cultures. And a lot of the actors/actresses in these movies are from Mainland China, where the language is mandarin. So the in-between tracks in Kung Fu Hustle, I believe, are supposed to be in Mandarin, because those characters are from mandarin speaking parts.

newtypeal

I think that's the version I saw, containing a mix of Mandarin and Cantonese. I just didn't understand why the dialogue tracks in the soundtracks would be totally one sided; one contains Mandarin only, Cantonese the other.
