I have thought to this question when I have read Battle Angel Alita: the battles and the cyberpunk setting was great with the background of Linkin Park, Soil and Rob Zombie. Video Girl Ai has nearly made me to cry with Mariah Carey and Michael Bolton sound. what are the best music-manga couplings?

Music while reading manga would be those without the singing.
And usually music w/o singings are OSTs
I'm listening to Nujabes+fat Jon's "Departure" (samurai champloo's OST)
Very nice beats.

Same here, I listen to OSTs and some karaoke versions of the songs with voices. I usually don't listen to music while I read manga, though.

The same here as doctor//GENETIC & Ponzu mostly listen to OST without singings. Like to listen to classical anime music and anime versions of mozart, beethoven and others. Also like the Japanese made classical anime music. Lately have been listening to music such as: The Onegai Teacher OST, FF muscial composition, and more..

m-flo's Expo Expo, Intergalactic Collection, and Astromantic are all you need to listen to. Am I kidding?

Whatever I recently downloaded/brought is probably what I'm listening to when I read manga... ._.a And I can manage to completely ignore the music and after finish reading book I would have no clue what songs has been played.

It is not that we listen to music all the time when reading :p . It is just what sort of music relaxes you when you read a manga or book. Don't you sometimes have the radio or tv on while reading?, well that's what we mean here. Some music that you find calm and relaxed with.

You have to concentrate on reading your manga? Must be some demanding stuff...

I like to read manga when listening to music, it's better than just staring at the wall.

Music enhances the mood of the manga. It makes it feel like you are watching an anime! anyways I preferably like to read a manga with the OST of the same anime. If not i just have a little bit of everything playing

I don't really listen to a specific genre of music... I just put something up soft in the background and start reading ^_^

And, being a drummer, my feet will live a life of there own going up and down on the beat :) I don't even have to think about that anymore :p I'M AUTOMATIC! \o/

Funny thing is later I associate the music with the mood of the manga I read while listening to it. Or maybe it's just the mood I was in back then...

I listen a lot of J-pop but It all depend what kind of manga I'm reading :

+ Our Lady Peace - Tenju Tenge
+ X-tv soundtrack - Angel sanctuary
+ Simple plan - Gantz
+ The Tea Party - Bleach
+ David Usher/Moist - Count Cain
+ Hoobastank - I''s
+ Lifehouse - Ah! Megami-sama

Ok, I know these are not J-pop music but when I'm listening to them while reading they put me in good atmosphere

need to concentrate whan i'm reading
so... no music, and sometimes with headphones, so i don't hear the noise made by brothers, sisters... all over me

3x3 Eyes + Loreena McKennitt (I had to google first to find the correct name :P )
But there is a problem with it, when you hear the music somewhere else, it feels as if you were in the manga :)

Also Evanescence goes well with most of the mangas

Thats why I chose OSTs!
Because there are no singings, not too distracting...

I don't really do that anymore unless I'm out and the place has music playing. When I was younger, my cousin and I shared a room and she always had the radio on (24/7). She said she couldn't sleep without music though she does now. Anyway, the music playing was typically 80's and I can remember some of the songs playing when I think of the books I read at the time. Strange to remember the song "Wishing Well" from when I read the horror novel "Babydoll." Oh well. I do try to listen to music when I am at work though. Usually it is Japanese anime and POP music and I can mouth the words while I am on the computer inputing info.

I use to listen to relaxing new age artists. And when it comes from J music, usually listen to instrumental OST animes or ovas...

I would have to say I usually listen to anime/game OSTs while I'm reading manga on my computer... I tend to have it silent when I have an actual manga in my hands though...

Wow, haven't seen this thread for a while. :p

I notice, that I haven't specified what I hear while reading manga (or books in general). Actually. it depends on if the manga is an easy-to-read (then practically anything is ok), or if it is something difficult or especially capturing (then a non-distracting OST is the best background music).

I have music on pretty much whenever I'm at the computer. Heck, I listen to music as long as there's nothing else to hear (class, conversation, movie, anime, etc).
Reading manga without music is relaxing, though. I usually prefer reading manga while taking nice hot baths.

I usually listen to video game music. Helps me relax more. oo;; But there are exceptions like when I read Death Note I listened to Day After Tomorrow's lost angel. Heh. It was fitting...

Although, when I read a really capturing manga, it is often that I start the replay of an album, start to read and an eyeblink later (so it seems to me), the album is already over without me really hearing it playing. Heck, it even happened that I started the replay and two hours later I noticed that I forgot to switch on the amplifier.:D

So true. Sometimes its like listening to music for the sake of listening.

I'd pick a song/album to start, but once I get into the reading, everything else just fades away.

Ever find while listening to the music, the Manga begins to envade your psyche and you zone out ...or become 'totally focussed' on the manga after a few minutes of in depth reading? Music i listen to is usually ost's from whichever anime I might be downloading, some singles like the outlaw star song and then as a 'total relaxation' classical music like Bach and Mozart.

Usually I'd listen to slow paced anime soundtracks without the vocals, especially those with piano and guitar, when reading manga.

OSTs are pretty normal. Sometimes I listen to metal, but usually it's OSTs, and if I can find it, it's from the anime series :)
